If you have searched for a blood test near you in Ottawa, here is the short answer: at Bio-Test Laboratory you do not need to book a spot for routine bloodwork. Just walk in with your Ontario health card and your lab requisition, and we take patients on a first-come, first-served basis. We have served the Ottawa-Carleton region and Eastern Ontario since 1971, and today we run 11 locations, several of them in suburbs and towns that other labs do not reach.
No booking needed, just walk in
Most people expect to schedule a blood test the way they would a dentist visit. For standard bloodwork at Bio-Test, that step is not required. Your health-care provider gives you a requisition, and you bring it to any of our labs during open hours. There is no requisition-booking process to complete first and no online reservation to secure. You are seen in the order you arrive.
You are welcome to book online through our patient portal if you prefer a set time, but walking in is completely normal here and is how most of our patients come in.
What to bring
- Your valid Ontario health card (OHIP covers most medically necessary tests)
- Your lab requisition, signed by an authorized provider and generally valid for 6 months from the date signed
- Payment for any uninsured tests, such as vitamin D, which is out-of-pocket at roughly $40 unless you meet exception criteria
- A list of your medications, in case a test has special instructions

Who can walk in
Anyone with a valid requisition can walk in for lab collection. That includes routine chemistry, blood counts, thyroid and cholesterol panels, pre-natal work, and most of the 1000-plus tests we offer. If your requisition calls for fasting, come in the morning and have only water beforehand. Your requisition will indicate whether fasting is required, so follow what it says rather than guessing.
A tip on timing
Mornings are our busiest stretch because fasting patients arrive early to eat afterward. If your test does not require fasting, coming later in the morning or in the afternoon often means a shorter wait. If you do need to fast, arriving right at opening is usually the smoothest choice.
X-ray and ECG are walk-in too
It is not only bloodwork. With a valid requisition you can also walk in for X-ray and ECG on a first-come, first-served basis, though booked appointments are available as well. X-ray is offered at Bells Corners and Smyth, and ECG at Bells Corners, Smyth, and Parkdale. Ultrasound is available at select locations by appointment.
